Central Bank

The Central Bank has the following duties:

  • Defining and implementing the monetary policy within the WAEMU,
  • Ensuring the stability of the WAEMU banking and financial system,
  • Promoting the smooth functioning and ensuring the supervision and security of payment systems within WAEMU,
  • Implementing the WAEMU exchange rate policy under the terms set out by the Council of Ministers,
  • Managing the official foreign reserves of the WAEMU Member States.
  • The Central Bank may undertake, with respect to the monetary equilibrium, missions or specific projects leading to the improvement of the monetary policy environment, the diversification as well as the strengthening of the WAEMU financial system and of the technical and professional capacities in the banking and financial area.
